What is POTS?

POTS = “plain old telephone service”

POTS is an acronym for “plain old telephone service” and generally refers to the older copper wires connecting to a standard telephone.

Those copper lines (or POTS as we call them in the industry) provide both power and connectivity to the telephone service provider. POTS can be used for voice, tone, data, fax, and many other types of signals; however, they are currently being phased out by the FCC due to newer technologies like VoIP and cellular. POTS will become obsolete in the coming years and has already started being phased out in some areas.
