Elevator Phone Line FAQ
Do I really need an elevator phone?
YES, every state has laws requiring emergency elevator phones or 2-way communication with emergency services, and that 2-way communication be accessible to people with disabilities. This phone or other means of 2-way communication must be ADA compliant.
If you do not have a working emergency elevator phone you will fail your elevator inspection.
How do I know if my elevator and elevator phones are ADA-compliant?
As stated, two-way communication must be available in elevator cabs that deaf/blind/wheelchair users, etc. can use, all call buttons must be a minimum of 3/4 of an inch in diameter, and button heights must be centered 42 inches from the floor. The elevator passenger car must be at least 51 inches deep and at least 68 inches wide, and the doors must be 36 inches wide and stay open for at least 3 seconds. Braille must be available below or next to the floor numbers on the control panel. Automatic verbal announcement of stop or non-verbal audible signal of passed floors and stops must be utilized. Emergency controls must be grouped at the bottom of the elevator control panel and have their centerlines no less than 35 inches above the finish floor. What is POTS?
POTS is a telecom industry term for “plain old telephone service” and generally refers to the older copper wires that connect to a standard telephone. Those copper lines or POTS provide both power to the phone and connectivity to the telephone service provider. POTS can be used for voice, data, and fax as well as many other types of signals. However, it is being phased out by the FCC and will likely become obsolete in the coming years.
